Adventures in Latidoe Stamp Making + New Packaging

A little excited and little nervous that I may have found an (other!) new obsession: stampmaking.

This is something I've always wanted to try out but never actually came around to buying materials and testing. You don't need fancy materials to make stamps...you can use styrafoam, tooth picks and paint. But I wanted to start off with a stamp for my up and coming store that I keep promising the world...and figured might as well get the good stuff.
thepaperplace.ca, nationalartcraft.com

I picked up this stamp making kit from Michaels for $15. It includes a 4x6" rubber stamp base, tracing paper, and a carving tool with two different blades.
First I played around probably too long with stamp ideas.
Then I traced the one I liked onto the tracing paper. To transfer the image to the rubber stamp, I traced over the design with a pencil.
Cut it out, flipped it onto the stamp then rubbed the back so the pencil would transfer.
Once the basics of your design are transfered you can go over details again with a pencil to make them more clear. And then of course remember that whatever areas you carve out will be white space. I tried to shade it in so that all the pink space would be what I had to carve out.
The blade just snaps into the tool. Then you just start shaving away...
My stamp is small so I just cut off what I needed.
Then tested it out! It's in now way perfect...but I think that's what makes handmade stamps special. They have a crafty made at home feel to them and for a line of hand crafted accessories...I think the stamp is pretty true to my 'brand' (if you can call it that)!
I'm still thinking up a presentable and cost effective way to package things. I like the simple brown paper look...so I might do something like this.

Maybe down the line I'll start making and possibly selling handmade stamps...might be fun :)

All including the lovely bright colors of spring and summer. Off I go to finish the prototypes...

Performing Live at The Ark, Ann Arbor with Dick Siegel

This signature on the wall means I've officially played at the Ark in Ann Arbor. I was super excited when Dick Siegel -- a previous songwriting teacher of mine at the University of Michigan -- asked me to open for him at his performance this weekend along with two other songwriters from his class. I would have (seriously) never thought I'd ever play at a venue like the Ark...it was very nerve wracking but very fun and I very much enjoyed hearing my former classmates play their songs (which I love...) again. And it was also great hearing Dick play as well. He's a great songwriter and also just a great performer in general. There's a lot to learn from him...

Singer/songwriter (and friend...) Katy signing the wall!

Hanging out backstage with Katy (singer/songwriter and friend...) while Dan (classmate and singer/songwriter) and Dick rehearsed.

Katy is an amazing and beautiful songwriter...like...amazing and truly beautiful. So I strongly encourage any one who has stumbled upon this post to check out her YouTube channel here or listen to this studio recording of "Jackpines and Lillies" -- the song that she performed on stage at the Ark.

I especially needed this encouragement...

I don't have any pictures of us on stage. But it's nice to have just lived on stage in the moment...rather than worrying about capturing any of it on film. I'm hoping there will be more performances in the future to come...

LatiDoe at Onsen For All Spa

Yesterday I visited Onsen For All Spa located in Kingston NJ. They were kind enough to invite me in, give me a tour of the beautifully renovated building, and feature some of my work in their boutique! If you are in need of some relaxation -- be it a hot water soak, aromatherapy massage, or meditation, Onsen will do the job.

Onsen offers a ton of great services in a friendly, comfortable and calm setting. I especially love the interior (and exterior) designs of the building -- the bamboo plants being one of my favorite touches. The meditation room is also a plus -- the shop owners said themselves they never want to rush their customers out of a place meant for relaxation and reflection.

I definately want to return sometime soon for a Restorative Yoga Workshop or a Hot Water Soak in the zen garden.

The East Brunswick Fine Arts Show

Messy with Charm Aprons, $25

Yesterday was the art show in East Brunswick at the municipal center pond. Was a lot of fun! This was my first show and it went very well. I may do another one in a couple weeks...we will see. Some artists don't bother with art shows because they think the income at the end of the day isn't worth all of the work that goes into it. It's true -- shows are a lot of work. My mom had a ceramic booth (I'll post pictures of her stuff later) and we were both up super late/early the night before packing things, finishing up last minute pieces, figuring out the display set up, and folding up the EZ-ups (that aren't entirely so easy to set up).

Even though prep time can be painstaking, I still enjoy art shows and think it would be a good experience to do one again. I also liked hearing feedback from the people buying my stuff -- they gave me some good ideas and advice. I never thought of art shows as being so resourceful, but they are actually good networking opportunities. You can stash hand fulls of business cards, meet tons of people and talk to tons of artists working in similar or entirely different mediums.

After all of the positive feedback at the show...I decided to make an ETSY shop. Barely anything is up yet...but if you're feeling curious you can find La ti Doe items at:

Glazing in the studio

My mom and I have been getting ready for the art show for a while now. She is selling pottery at her booth and I'll be selling smaller things like earrings, journals, and stationary at my booth. She just recently got through her final bisque fire of pots, which means it's time to glaze. She made a ton of stuff! I spent some time in the studio with my sisters helping her with glazing. My mom pretty much hates glazing -- but I don't. I think glazing is actually fun because you really have no idea what the final result will look like. Different combinations of glazes will have totally different effects and even if you try the same combination twice, it may still look totally different. Even though glazing is kind of an art that does itself, it's still possible for everyone to develop their own styles of glazing which always shine through after the glazed pieces are fired.

These aren't fired yet, so they look pretty dull for now. It's pretty much like painting with watery dust. In the kiln, the glaze melts into a kind of glass and they look a lot nicer. I'll post pics of those when they are done.

DIY: Button Earrings

I found these buttons upstairs in my jewelry box that I saved from an old pea coat. I also happened to find some gold earring-backs in my mom's gallery. One of the many nice things about being back home in NJ for Spring break. I don't stumble upon anything all that inspiring in my tiny studio apartment back in Ann Arbor. Ever.  But, anyways, I thought they would make great earrings. After toying with every glue that exists pretty much, I realized that simple hot glue works the best. And within minutes (well, actually all day after struggling with glue) I had a new pair of earrings.

Then, of course, I had to make more. So I figured out a way to make my own buttons with wooden studs (sold at Michael's) and some fun fabric that I cut out of an old patched-work shirt that I bought a million years ago and never wore. I don't have pictures of the process, but basically, you just cut out small squares of fabric, wrap them around the wooden studs and do all of the gluing in the back. The goal is to make a bunch (along with  whatever else I can manage making) to sell in an art show this Summer.  I'm already in love with DIY as it is, but DIY projects are even more great when you are not only saving money, but making money, too.
